Dear Delegates,
Welcome to the newest addition to the NAIMUN XLIX family, the United States National Security Apparatus, 2002! This fast-paced organ is designed to simulate the entirety of the broad entity that is the U.S. National Security Apparatus, with committees concerning topics ranging from politics to military planning to policy making. As a delegate in the United States National Security Apparatus, you will learn about how various organizations within the U.S. government interact to attempt to formulate policy to deal with pressing national security issues. As a completely new organ, the U.S National Security Apparatus will be an exciting opportunity for delegates to compete in an innovative environment.
At NAIMUN XLIX, the U.S. National Security Apparatus will be set during 2002, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, and during the run up to what eventually became the Iraq War. The security environment post-9/11 was unlike anything the U.S. had ever encountered before—the greatest threat to national security was now not a nation state armed with tanks or nuclear weapons, but rather a transnational terrorist group comprised of religious fundamentalists armed with little more than box cutters. The challenge of managing the course of a completely new “Global War on Terror” was a significant one, and consensus was not always readily apparent. While this organ is in no way a joint crisis committee, each of the organ’s five committees will feature thematic linkages and commonalities in crisis updates—nevertheless, committees will be able to respond to situations distinctly from one another.
Working together with an amazing staff, we anticipate that the U.S. National Security Apparatus will truly be a unique and incredible experience to learn about how policymakers keep America safe while competing in the nation’s capital. If you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to contact either us or your chairs. Hoya Saxa, and we look forward to seeing you in February!
