African Development Bank Group (AfDB)
APPROXIMATE COMMITTEE SIZE: 70 Double DELEGATIONS
The African Development Bank Group is a regional multilateral development finance institution that contributes to the sustainable economic development and social progress of African countries. Its five main strategic priorities are feeding, powering, industrializing, integrating, and improving the quality of life for the people of Africa. The AfDB was founded in 1964 following the end of colonial involvement in Africa as a result of the continent’s desire for both a unified political body (now in the form of the African Union) and an economic organization. A large part of the AfDB’s focus is on fostering foreign direct investment from nations outside of Africa and contributing to development through providing low-interest loans to member states. The African Development Bank Group also rallies its expertise and resources towards issues of human rights and social development, especially working in regions affected by violence and political instability. As such, this committee will focus on critical human rights issues, such as Topic A: grappling with problems of historical reconciliation while sustainably and justly reforming Africa’s tourism industry. Topic B: supporting displaced refugees as a result of the ongoing climate crisis, may also be considered.
Chairs: Ally Chung & Ryan Reamy
