United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSocD), 1995
APPROXIMATE COMMITTEE SIZE: 55 double DELEGATIONS
In March 1995, the United Nations Commission for Social Development hosted the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen March 1995 with the goals of eradicating poverty, protecting basic human rights, and revisiting issues of social integration. Marked as the largest gathering of world leaders at the time, the summit marked a monumental milestone towards defining the United Nations' commitments and social development policy for decades to come. This historical time period is overshadowed by the complex political and economic pressures that came with the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the dissolution of Yugoslavia, and the ongoing challenges following an era of colonization in Africa, South America, and Asia. In this divided context, delegates will consider either Topic A: Political and Economic Restructuring in Post-Soviet States, or Topic B: Justice, Reconciliation, and Collective Memory with the goal of addressing the issues caused by the collapse of old states and empires and the rise of a new world order.
Chairs: Sharona Nagamuthu & Jack Willis
