Ad hoc Committee of the Secretary-General

APPROXIMATE COMMITTEE SIZE: 60 single DELEGATIONs

In both national and international Model United Nations circuits, the Ad Hoc committees are renowned for the skills, knowledge, and quick thinking they demand. At NAIMUN, the Ad Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General — General Assembly will bring together the most experienced delegates to compete in a simulation designed specifically to challenge them.

By combining the unique, non-traditional nature of an ad hoc committee with the procedures of a general assembly, this committee will test the depth of delegates' skills through two additional features. The first is that committee topics will not be available until the start of the first committee session. The second is that students will not receive their position briefs until then.

These elements will push delegates to showcase their critical thinking, creativity, and resourcefulness at the highest stage in North America — if they accept the challenge.

Note: Given the ad hoc nature of the committee, it is recommended that all delegates have previous experience in general assembly committees. Delegates will not be required to submit a position paper, and the use of technology in the room will be at the chair’s discretion.

Chairs: Alexia Espinoza Vlad & Mark manaois

Topics/issues to consider

The topic will be released at the start of Committee Session I. All delegates will be given a reading period to review the background guide and prepare for debate at the start of Committee Session I.

about the chairs

Mark Manaois is a member of the Class of 2027 in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He is majoring in International Politics with a concentration in International Law, Institutions and Ethics. A champion of the Pacific Northwest, Mark is from the other Washington, born and raised in Tacoma before moving across the country.

This will be Mark’s 8th year of Model UN; he could not be more thrilled staffing his last conference ever! Last year, Mark had the honor of being the Executive Director of NAIMUN LXIII. NAIMUN has held a special place in his heart, having previously been the LXII Director of Registration and a member of the Logistics and Security Team at LXI. He is very excited to Chair the Ad-hoc of the Secretary-General for NAIMUN LXIV!

Outside of NAIMUN, Mark can be found cracking jokes with his fellow Club Filipino board members or working with nonprofits with the Georgetown Global Consulting group. In his free time, Mark likes to curate playlists on Spotify, find new coffee shops, or explore and photograph the various spots of Washington D.C

Mark is ecstatic to be one of your chairs for the Ad-hoc of the Secretary General!
