The Football War, 1969 - Organization of American States (OAS)

APPROXIMATE COMMITTEE SIZE: 25 delegates

With conflict brewing between its members, the Organization of American States (OAS) has suddenly been plunged into an unprecedentedly important position. The organization must help diffuse escalating tensions between El Salvador, Honduras, and other affiliated nations while still maintaining the cordiality and spirit of cooperation that it has attempted to foster. But aside from inter-state relations, the OAS must also judge how to effectively satisfy each nation’s diverse constituencies– including business groups, labor, and more– in order to play an effective role in mediation. All the while, states will face a competition to assert their power within the bloc, with players like the United States and Brazil vying to keep their elevated influence, and many others attempting to break through.

CRISIS MANAGER: Saniya Bhagwat

CHAIR: Chichi Ugochuku

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Use multilateral cooperation to help diffuse tensions between El Salvador and Honduras.

  • Balance the voice of wealthier and influential states with that of smaller members.

About the Chair

Chichi Ugochuku is a member of the class of 2027 in the College of Arts and Sciences, double majoring in Government and Chinese. She grew up in Pennsylvania but is a citizen of New Jersey by birth. Chichi’s Model UN journey began as a freshman at Georgetown, where she currently competes on the collegiate circuit and staffs NAIMUN and its collegiate sister conference NCSC. Between NAIMUN and NCSC, Chichi has served as a Crisis Analyst, Director, and two-time Crisis Manager (this will be her third run as a CM). Beyond MUN, she volunteers at the Georgetown Admissions Ambassador Program as well as for GU Politics. Around 2am, Chichi can usually be found drilling Chinese or drafting an essay with a Red Bull in hand. Around 2pm, she is most likely napping or pacing her room while narrating fake podcast episodes to herself. Chichi is incredibly excited for the fun, intrigue, and surprises that await her committee!
