IAEA operates as an autonomous body within the United Nations system, promoting the peaceful application of nuclear energy while working to prevent its misuse for destructive purposes. Topic A will focus on the escalating concern over non-state actors gaining access to weapons of mass destruction. Delegates will evaluate how international oversight can prevent the transfer of nuclear technology to paramilitary organizations and terrorist groups, especially in unstable regions. Topic B will center on the challenges posed by aging nuclear power plants. Delegates will explore issues of infrastructure degradation, safety standards, and policy decisions regarding the future of these plants.

about the chair

Mary Abi-Karam is a junior in the School of Foreign Service, majoring in International Politics. Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she chaired and crisis-directed committees at UNCMUNC and MUNCH, and coached high school delegates. Now, she competes nationally with Georgetown’s Model UN team. At Georgetown, Mary serves as Director of Special Events for the International Relations Club and is a member of Project Maverick and the GU Arab Society. Outside of Model UN, she can usually be found napping or in the makerspace. She’s excited to join the NAIMUN team and looks forward to helping deliver a sharp, well-run conference.
